This school year has been different for everyone, and no one more so than high school students. This year’s IDEA Centre participants decided to wrap up a fantastic winter session with a mini-prom – a chance to celebrate their accomplishments with their new friends, together in person. Most schools this year were unable host a large end of year celebration, so this was a chance to get dressed up and celebrate a job well done. Envision Saint John was pleased to host.
The IDEA Centre is a co-op style program designed to develop student-led businesses in the Anglophone South School District ASD-S in Saint John, New Brunswick. Students from various schools gather for two periods each day during the school year in a dynamic, supportive workspace in uptown Saint John to develop and grow their business and social enterprises. They receive mentorship and expertise from entrepreneurs, social innovators and community builders while receiving school credits for their work. The program’s success has largely been due to the support from strong community organizations such as Envision Saint John: The Regional Growth Agency, ConnexionWorks, Brilliant Labs, the Social Enterprise Hub, Junior Achievement, Toastmasters, the Teen Resource Centre and many, many others.
Students benefit from interaction with business experts, community organizations, and mentors, while learning how to pitch their ideas. The program requires them to be independent, hard-working, supportive of others and a great team player. They learn to validate their business idea through market research, learn about finances and how to confidently sell their idea to others. Students wrap-up the program with the skills, networks and knowledge to pursue their own business or social venture.
We wish all of this year’s participants the best of luck in their future endeavors and a huge congratulations to the Class of 2021.
