Saint John region preparing for growth: Housing Starts Outpacing Pre-Pandemic Levels

SAINT JOHN: The Saint John region has more than doubled Housing Starts from pre-pandemic levels and is outperforming 2021 by 80% year-to-date.

January 1 – June 30, 2022, saw 318 housing starts vs. 177 in 2021. In 2019, the number of housing starts from January – June was 159.

Building Permit values from January to June 2022 have increased nearly 40% above pre-pandemic numbers.

“As a data-driven agency, we look at trends to help inform strategy. The current data showcases the city of Saint John and our surrounding towns that make up the region are having a recording-breaking year when it comes to regional housing starts,” said Paulette Hicks, CEO of Envision Saint John: The Regional Growth Agency. “Everyone is excelling, and we expect to keep trending positively as the season progresses.”

With three months of the construction season statistics complete, the City of Saint John is also seeing the highest share of new units built in the last decade.
