Sport Tourism Momentum Strong with Saint John to Host Regional and National Track & Field Events in 2023

SAINT JOHN:  The Saint John Track & Field Club will host competitors from across the region and country with major indoor track & field events scheduled for the Saint John region again this year at the Irving Oil Field House.

  • NB Indoor Track & Field Championships & University Invitational – January 27-28, 2023
  • Atlantic University Sports Track & Field Championship – February 23-25, 2023
  • Atlantic Club Indoor Championships – February 26, 2023
  • Athletics Canada Indoor Championship Presented by Saint John LNG – Mar 18-19, 2023

Bill MacMackin, President of the Saint John Track & Field Club explains how collaboration is the key to success when it comes to pulling off another year of competitions.

“Working with Athletics New Brunswick and our federation partners in the Maritimes, Athletics Canada, and the UNB REDS allows us to host these events and shows the advantage and the power of teamwork,” MacMackin said. “This is the second time for most of these Track & Field Championship to be held at the Irving Oil Field House. We are proud to have Saint John LNG as a presenting sponsor for the Athletics Canada event along with the support of the Province of New Brunswick, and the Regional Growth Agency assists ensuring successful events.”

These national events are estimated to have a collective economic impact of between $1.5- $2M for the region. Envision Saint John: The Regional Growth Agency is a gold sponsor for the events.

“Sport tourism not only generates energy and vitality for a destination, it is an economic driver for hotels, restaurants, retail and transportation,” says Paulette Hicks, CEO of Envision Saint John: The Regional Growth Agency. “Building on the momentum of events like the 2022 Memorial Cup Championship and the IIHF World Junior exhibition game, the region is kicking off 2023 in a big way with the Saint John Track & Field Club events.”
